Chiropractic care is a growing healthcare profession that helps patients experiencing low back pain, migraines and so much more. The benefits are endless. However, only approximately 13% of Manitobans use chiropractic care. A surprising statistic, since Manitoba will actually cover a portion of your first seven visits!

There are many ways to incorporate chiropractic care into your health routine. You may wish to treat an existing problem or take preventative measures for any possible injuries in the future. The chiropractic approach is addressing and fixing the problem, not just the symptoms.

Whether you’ve been to a chiropractor or not, you may have preconceived notions of what to expect. Like the sound you hear is your bones cracking, or chiropractic is only for care post-car accident. That’s why we’re answering some questions and debunking common myths about chiropractic care.

There are various ways to get adjusted.

Not all chiropractors will take the same approach when adjusting you. There are multiple techniques and methods used by chiropractors to adjust, including the manually and a tool called an Activator. Always remember if you’re not comfortable being adjusted a certain way, you can talk to your chiropractor to find a better alternative.

No two Chiropractors are the same.

Not only is finding a provider based on your personal preference, many perform and have developed different ways of practicing. You can also find providers who specialize in specific areas, such as sports and rehabilitation or pediatric and families. Although your visits may differ from chiropractor to chiropractor, they all have one thing in common and that is they’re all trying to help you achieve your optimal health.

You don’t need to be in a car accident, and you don’t need a referral.

Chiropractors are often attributed to care after a motor vehicle accident, but we can help in so many other ways. Adjustments can help with a wide variety of health concerns, such as neck stiffness, sore ankles, and even headaches. You also don’t need a referral to see a chiropractor as they are primary care providers. Anyone is able to seek chiropractic care by making a simple phone call to book an appointment.

You also don’t need to be in pain to see a chiropractor.

Pain is the last symptom to arrive when there is something to be concerned with, and the first to leave. Just because you aren’t in pain, doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from chiropractic care. Getting adjusted on a regular basis can ensure your body is moving in all the right ways to carry out your daily activities.

Chiropractic helps athletes improve their athletic performance.

Did you know that athletes like Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers, and Wayne Gretzky have all benefited from chiropractic in their professional career? What some may not know is that you don’t need to be a professional athlete to get chiropractic care. No matter what level you play, you can benefit from an adjustment to help increase movement and help prevent injuries.

We don’t just treat lower back pain.

It’s common to think a visit to the chiropractor is often for lower back pain relief. While lower back pain is the most common reason for seeking chiropractic care, we treat many other musculoskeletal concerns. We have patients that come in for concerns such as sciatica, arthritis, headaches, neck pain, extremities, and just improving mobility in general.

Chiropractic is for any age.

The average person starts going for chiropractic care at 40 years old. What many forget is that you can gain the benefits of chiropractic care at any age, even newborns. If you’re unsure if it’s right for you, give your local chiropractor a call.

It’s not your bones cracking.

For many, chiropractic is associated with bones cracking, but that isn’t the case. The “crack” you are hearing is a bubble of joint fluid popping and air being released. So while some adjustments you might hear the popping, not every adjustment will make a sound. If you don’t want to hear that noise, let your chiropractor know. There are still ways to be adjusted effectively without hearing a sound.

You don’t have to come forever.

Once you experience how great you feel after getting adjusted, you may wish to continue care long-term. Although maintenance care can be valuable and helpful for preventing problems in the future, you don’t always have to continue care. Providing exercises and at-home recommendations is an important part of treatment and can help you feel better longer in-between visits.
